Some thoughts about the Time Capsule project aka 808 Box

Many people write me to ask what is inside the 808 Box. Yes!, after five years there are still people who do not know anything about this project and that makes me very happy because it reflects how incredibly huge electronic music is today.

Most of you already know what is inside, but for others this is like a new project even we have released five 808 Boxes in last years. Also it is funny to know some people think is always the same 808 Box in different colors and they think we are re-press the same thing again again and again :)

In the last 5 years we have released five completely different 808 Boxes. Every 808 Box includes many records and we will never re-press any of the records included in each of these wooden boxes. In total we have released 44 records, 284 tracks and also two records with 64 loops from the original Roland TR-808.

The original name of this project, although now everyone calls it 808 Box, is Time Capsule. The aim of this project has always been to make an annual photograph of the electro movement thinking about inspiring future generations, creating an archive in which electro music can be recognized as what it truly is: a global movement that does not need any magazine to recognize it as such because it has shown several times in recent decades that is able to survive in the most absolute underground without the need to monopolize front pages, stupid charts and top tens that are made with the sole intention of directing sales.

The true heroes of this world movement are the artists who, despite not being able to live on their own music, still sit in front of their machines, only for one reason, the inexplicable love they feel for this music, and, of course, also people who have never put a finger on a machine but have supported this movement by buying thousands of records and have shared their love for those records using the word to mouth for years and now all kinds of social networks, even when most people thought that the vinyl was dead.

After 5 years the Time Capsule project aka 808 Box is a consolidated and respected project but it would be absolutely nothing without the help of the artists that are part of the project and all the people who year after year buy every 808 Box.

I want to make one thing clear, this project being a terrible effort at all levels and a sample of an incredible musical quality, is only a small part of this movement, a drop in the ocean. Yes, the 808 Box is a sample of how diverse the electro can be, but there is much more, it is impossible, even in the eleven vinyl records that we have included this year, to honor how diverse the electro music is. We are living a golden age, the quality of the records that come out every month is incredible, not only at the level of composition, but also the quality of sound, design… It is something we have to be aware of but it is also something we have to celebrate. Electro is the source of contemporary electronic music, but it does not need too much exposure, what it needs is to maintain the unconditional love of thousands of people around the world as has happened to this day, people who understand the meaning of this movement beyond the sound produced by the needle when you drop it on the record.

Long live the Electro!

Shipwrec 054: Larry McCormick – Intelectro EP 12″

“Shipwrec is delighted to welcome an electro pioneer into the fold. Larry McCormick has been at the coal face of machine music for two decades, carving razor sharp cuts under his Exzakt alias whilst spearheading future funk on his exemplary Monotone Records. Intelectro exemplifies twenty years of experience, twenty years of music production and twenty years of talent. “Banger” does exactly what it says, a crunching work that breaks with millisecond-perfect precision before deeper layers are unfurled. “Vibes” feels like three compositions combined. From its spacious intro the track dives into acid chords before resurfacing in refined warmth. Vintage grooves open “Rocker” with some extra muscle added through heavy kicks as samples circle to an ever tighter noose. Styles shift and strafe across the quartet leaving the lines of set expectations to blur and ultimately disappear. “Ride Low” is the final proof of this, understated percussion leading to sky soaring sytnhlines and free flowing harmonies. A 12″ that melds disparate sounds with frightening ease, an artist bridging electro past, present and future.”

This new record was produced by Dutch veteran Roland van Oorschot aka BS–1 Growing up, he listened to bands like Slayer, Fear Factory and Anthrax, which formed his musical education and continues to impact his productions.

Producing and experimenting since the mid 1990s, van Oorschot has been a long time fixture in the electronic music world. He has created many projects over the years including Funxiun, Utroid and the previously mentioned BS-1.

You can find his unique tracks on various labels including Marguerita Recordings and Gooiland Elektro.

For Discos Atónicos he made the Age Of Aggression EP, featuring 5 massive electro cuts that are a straight shot to the dance floor.

On the A-SIDE the tracks Kill Switch, Genetic Waste and Age Of Aggression, combine intergalac-tically distorted beats with industrial elements.

We hear dark atmospheres, dystopian lyrics and metallic snares sharp like knives.

On the B-SIDE, Fear of a Dead Planet serves brutal electro while Eternal Oblivion surprisingly slows down the pitch and ends the amazing journey in form of a sweet electronic ballade.
